-Phrasal Verbs-

Instructions for students:
1. Copy down the following

1. run out of
Sentences:
i) I better buy another carton of milk today before I run out of it.
ii) The supermarket runs out of my favourite chocolates, thus I have to go to another supermarket to get them.
Meaning:

2. sell out
Sentences:
i) Wii Games are very popular. Sometimes they sell out in a day or two!
ii) I cannot go to the concert because all the tickets are sold out.
Meaning:

3. stock up
Sentences:
i) I plan to bake 500 cookies this weekend. I need to stock up on the baking ingredients such as dried fruit, chocolate chips and lots of nuts!
ii) The locals stocked up on groceries when they received news of the hurricane.
Meaning:

4. mark down
Sentences:
i) I am going to buy the Nike shoes if they are marked down.
ii) They decided to mark down every item in the store before the Christmas holidays. Lower prices always attract more customers.
Meaning:

5. shop around
Sentences:
i) John shops around the shopping mall to buy a new pair of sport shoes.
ii) Before buying a new dress, Clara wanted to shop around at a few store.
Meaning:

6. ring up
Sentences:
i) The last time I went shopping, the cashier took 10 minutes to ring up my purchase.
ii) Jenny had to wait for another cashier to ring up her groceries.
Meaning:

7. try on
Sentences:
i) I want to try on these pants before I buy them. Size 8 may be small for me.
ii) I had to wait for 10 minutes to try on the pants I found on sale as there was a long line-up of people to the fitting room.
Meaning:

8. sell off
Sentences:
i) The sports store wants to sell off all the winter equipment at the end of the season so that there will be space for the new arrivals
ii) The store is relocating next month. The owner wants to sell off entire inventory to reduce the moving expenses.
Meaning:

9. pick out
Sentences:
i) Jane helped her friend to pick out some accessories to go with her dress.
ii) Their selection of cakes was huge, and I had difficulty to pick out just one.
Meaning:

10. shell out
Sentences:
i) I regret not buying that heater for $70 last year at the end of the season. This winter I had to shell out twice as much!
ii) He would shell out $1000 for a bottle of water in the middle of a desert.
Meaning:
